Hey all! This issue is full, which is a good sign for Arizona. It's also more than any one person can take on so try not to feel overwhelmed. Anything in here that catches your eye is worth following and one thing is plenty for a week!

Voices from Arizona: Statewide Listening Circles · August 8 · Virtual
The League of Women Voters hosts a conversation among Arizonans about what gets in the way of voting here & what would help, at 10:00 AM on the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act as part of a National Day of Action. It runs on video from wherever you are, so distance and August heat aren't factors, and listening counts as taking part. The League is also hosting a circle for Latino voters at the same hour and one for Native voters at 1:30 PM. Virtual, statewide.

If getting out of the house isn't happening for you in this heat, these two actions take less time than reading the rest of this email. 😜

• Comment on the proposed DACA rule before August 4. DHS has proposed adding discretionary barriers for applicants based on arrests or allegations, not only convictions. Aliento's toolkit walks you through it. Two minutes using their text, five if you write your own.
• Call Sen. Kelly about the CLARITY Act. 602-671-7901. The crypto industry has spent $189 million on this cycle, much of it behind a bill that strips ethics rules for officials who regulate the industry. Sen. Kelly hasn't taken a public position, which makes this one of the calls that counts. Background and an email option here.

Letter Writing and Ballot Guides · August 6 · Phoenix
LD4 Democrats are mailing general election ballot guides to nearly 40,000 voters and need help stuffing the envelopes. Sessions start at 11:00 AM and run Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, so August 8 works too.

Voter Registration Drive at Kingman First Friday · August 7 · Kingman
The Sterbinsky for Congress campaign registers new Mohave County voters at Kingman's largest monthly block party, starting 5:30 PM. The Mobilize description still references the July primary deadline; the one that matters now is for the November 3 general. Outdoors.

Public Comment Training · August 8 · Casa Grande
Rural Arizona Engagement walks through how to find a meeting agenda, sign up for Request to Speak at the Legislature, and comment at a county Board of Supervisors meeting. Runs 10:00 AM to noon, with the same training in Sierra Vista at the same time. Indoors, two hours.

Immigration

Enforcement pressure in the Valley hasn't let up, and two of this week's biggest immigration asks are calls and comments rather than events. The DACA comment deadline is in the five-minute section above; the Surprise detention facility is in the Action Alerts below.

Several campaigns and district parties are holding low-key events this week where you can meet candidates in person, including some down-ballot races that rarely get attention.

Copper State Victory opens its Bullhead City campaign office at 5:00 PM with Gov. Katie Hobbs, plus campaign updates and a rundown of local volunteer needs. Indoors, evening.

Meet House candidates Holly Lyon and Kevin Volk and Senate candidate Edgar Soto, ask questions, and eat something. Hosted by Arizona LD17 Democrats, with doors at 5:30 PM, town hall at 6:00, done by 7:00. Indoors, one hour, refreshments.

This Is Our Mesa Campaign Launch · August 8 · Mesa
AZ AANHPI Advocates, an Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander organizing group, launches its Mesa campaign with a community gathering running 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM.

Also this week: Fuerte Arts Movement hosts Friday Jams, a potluck music night in Phoenix on August 7, and Keys to Change offers a public tour of the Phoenix campus where twelve organizations coordinate homelessness services, 9:00 AM on August 5.

• Rush-Hour Resistance Rallies, weekday mornings and evenings at rotating spots across the Phoenix metro. Current locations at RhRR.us.
• Stand Up CD 8, Saturdays at 8:00 AM in Phoenix, over Rep. Abe Hamadeh's refusal to hold a public town hall. Details.
• Peaceful Resistance to Fascism, Saturdays at 9:00 AM, 4th Avenue and 16th Street in Yuma. Details.
• White Mountains Weekly Rally, Fridays at 4:00 PM in Show Low. Details

Call Surprise City Council to demand a public hearing on the ICE facility. The proposed ICE detention facility in Surprise is paused but not cancelled. The Mayor and Council met privately with Sen. Ruben Gallego about it before recess, and residents still haven't heard what was said. The Council's first post-recess meeting is August 4.

• What to do: Call and ask for a public hearing, including safety details for detainees and neighbors. The site sits inside the Rinchem plant's chemical release exposure zone, Dysart High School is 0.6 miles away, and the Fire Marshal has confirmed no emergency planning has been done. • Northwest Valley Indivisible is also organizing people to pack the chambers at the August 4 meeting.

Write postcards to Native voters who need to update their registration. About 19,000 Native voters across Arizona's tribal lands need to update their registration before November. Arizona Native Democrats runs a self-service postcard program called Cardzilla and is asking volunteers for 25 postcards each.

• What to do: Create a Cardzilla account, get a batch of 25 addresses and a script, then write and mail them before September 1.

Volunteer for the Arizona Election Defense Corps. More than 57 Indivisible chapters across Arizona are organizing to protect the general election. The Voting Rights Lab lists Arizona among the states most at risk of election disruption.

• What to do: Sign up to volunteer. Volunteers monitor county Boards of Supervisors meetings, watch drop boxes and polling locations, report voter suppression, and help with rapid response.
