Sunburnt & Stubborn: Arizona's Weekly Activism Roundup | May 4 - 10, 2026

Welcome to Arizona Advocacy Hub

Arizona's sunburnt and stubborn activists have more than 17 events across the state to choose from this week, two of which we want to specifically highlight: May 6 is the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors vote on Project Baccara (a proposed data center with 18 natural gas turbines next to Luke AFB that the base commander has already flagged as incompatible with operations). Those in the Phx West Valley, please show up, submit public comment, or watch the livestream - links and more info below. And HCR2001 and SCR1001 are still moving through the legislature - these ballot referrals would restrict mail ballots and early voting for working Arizonans. Contact your legislators before those clear committee early in the week. Read the action alerts, find your event, and let's go!

Quick Action Alerts

These actions are timely, high-impact, and quick.

  • 1 CLICK ACTION Tell AZ lawmakers: No tax cuts for billionaires, no cuts to SNAP or healthcare. Arizona MAGA legislators revealed a state budget that cuts SNAP, healthcare, and public-school funding while giving tax breaks to the wealthy. Show up in person to oppose or testify, or email your lawmaker directly at the link above.
  • 1 CLICK ACTION Demand your rep oppose warrantless AI mass surveillance — FISA Section 702. Section 702 of FISA — which allows warrantless domestic surveillance — is up for reauthorization. Tell your representative to oppose AI-powered mass surveillance and uphold the Constitution.
  • 1 CLICK ACTION Tell your rep: No more funding for ICE brutality. The GOP is using budget reconciliation to funnel up to $140 billion more into ICE and Border Patrol. If you have a Republican representative, call or email them now to oppose the package.
  • 1 CLICK ACTION Tell Congress: No ICE concentration camps anywhere. The federal government is converting commercial warehouses into ICE prison camps, but local and legal opposition has already stopped 13 projects. Tell your members of Congress to oppose new warehouse-style camps and any spending to build or operate them.
  • Oppose HB 2266 & SB 1741: Keep Religious Instruction Out of Public Schools. HB 2266 would require public schools to permit released-time religious instruction; SB 1741 would require schools to award academic credit for it — expanding LifeWise Academy's Christian evangelism program into the public school day. Contact your legislators and check if your district is involved.
  • Stop Project Baccara: Sign the Petition & Contact Officials. The proposed data center with 18 natural gas turbines near Luke AFB goes before the Maricopa County Board on May 6. Sign the petition, email supervisors and the Surprise mayor, or attend the hearing in person.
  • Remove Surprise Mayor Sartor as Safety Coordinator of Dysart School District. Dysart High School Student Body Vice President Cali Overs spent months at city council meetings opposing an ICE detention center opening less than a mile from her school. Mayor Kevin Sartor (who is also the Dysart School District Safety Coordinator) told her in an April 15 meeting that he has no student safety plan for it. The school's first shelter-in-place drill didn't happen until March 13, over seven months into the school year. Sartor also never warned students about a hazardous chemical storage facility less than a mile from campus, students found out at an Attorney General press conference. Email the Dysart governing board and superintendent at super@dysart.org to demand his removal from the Safety Coordinator role.
  • 1 CLICK ACTION Tell your AZ legislators: Vote NO on HCR2001 and SCR1001. These ballot referrals would restrict mail ballots, early voting, and on-site early ballot drop-off on Election Day. There is still time to stop them.
  • 1 CLICK ACTION Oppose Big Oil immunity — support state climate disclosure laws. The EPA is rolling back the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, which would end emissions disclosure for nearly all stationary industrial sources. Urge your representatives to oppose fossil fuel industry immunity and support state-level climate transparency laws.
  • 1 CLICK ACTION Save the VA: Tell Congress to Protect Veteran Healthcare. After 35 veteran leaders traveled to Washington to demand answers on VA cuts, Common Defense launched an action tool to contact Congress. The campaign calls for public VA staffing data and a halt to cuts that veterans and military families depend on.
  • 1 CLICK ACTION Stop AI from Denying Medicare Coverage. The Trump administration and CMS Administrator Dr. Oz are proposing to let AI systems determine which Medicare procedures patients can access, with AI companies paid based on how much coverage they deny. Email Congress to block AI-powered healthcare denials.
  • 1 CLICK ACTION Tell Gov. Hobbs: Create a Statewide LGBTQ+ Crisis Hotline. Following the elimination of the federal LGBTQ+ lifeline, Indivisible Northern AZ is calling on Governor Hobbs to establish a dedicated, affirming statewide crisis line staffed by trained counselors for LGBTQ+ youth in Arizona.
