Sunburnt & Stubborn: Weekly Activism Roundup | Apr 6 - Apr 12

Welcome to Arizona Advocacy Hub

Welcome back, all. Our pace is not letting up: this week brings city councils in Surprise and Flagstaff, a Maricopa County Board of Supervisors meeting, two rapid response trainings, a day labor corner organizing workshop, a strategy session with Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, and — critically — a warning about fake Protect Education petitions circulating across the state. Read the action alerts carefully this week before you sign anything. There is a lot happening. Here is where to show up.

What's Happening This Week

Here’s what’s coming up across Arizona in the days ahead organized by issue area and date so you can quickly find what fits your schedule.

Immigration & ICE Resistance

Wednesday, April 8 | Solidarity Accompaniment Rapid Response Volunteer Training | 6:00 – 8:00 PM | Glendale Borderlands Resource Initiative and Puente Human Rights Movement are training volunteers in Migra Watch, Solidarity Accompaniment, and Rapid Response at Glendale Community College. Learn how to observe, verify, accompany, and report — safely and effectively.

Thursday, April 10 | Adopt a Day Labor Corner Training | 6:00 PM | East Valley The National Day Laborer Organizing Network is hosting a workshop on how to show up nonviolently at day labor corners to protect immigrant neighbors as ICE activity intensifies across the Phoenix metro. If you are not at risk of deportation, NDLON is asking you to consider showing up in person.

Thursday, April 9 | Neighborhood Defense Training — Virtual | 5:00 PM AZ / 8:00 PM ET | Virtual Organized Power in Numbers is hosting a virtual training on how to canvass your community and prepare neighbors and local businesses in case of an ICE raid. Held the second Thursday of every month. Recording available for those who cannot attend live.

Saturday, April 11 | ICE Out of Home Depot — Phoenix Protest | 9:00 AM | Phoenix The National Day Laborer Organizing Network continues its weekly protest outside the Home Depot at 36th and Thomas demanding the company publicly condemn ICE raids on its properties and take steps to protect workers and customers.

City Councils & Government Accountability

Tuesday, April 7 | Surprise City Council Meeting — No ICE Detention | 6:00 PM | Surprise Over 1,000 people have already shown up at previous Surprise City Council meetings to oppose the planned ICE detention facility. Northwest Valley Indivisible is calling on residents to show up again — sign up in advance to speak and push the council to refuse voluntary cooperation with ICE, initiate legal challenges, and demand federal accountability. Non-residents are asked to protest peacefully outside City Hall starting at 5:30 PM.

Tuesday, April 7 | Flagstaff City Council — End Housing Source-of-Income Discrimination | 3:00 PM | Flagstaff Indivisible Northern AZ is asking community members to attend Flagstaff City Council to urge adoption of an ordinance banning source-of-income discrimination in housing — which occurs when landlords deny applications because a tenant's income includes Section 8, Social Security, disability benefits, or other assistance. Neither federal nor state law currently prohibits this but Flagstaff might, if people show up!

Wednesday, April 8 | Maricopa County Board of Supervisors — Protect Our Elections | 9:00 AM | Phoenix LUCHA is calling on community members to pack the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors meeting and send a clear message: do not let Trump and his allies disrupt our elections. Show up and make the board hear it.

Quick Action Alerts

These actions are timely, high-impact, and quick.

Read carefully this week — there is a fake petition circulating that could confuse voters. Share widely!

  • WARNING: Fake Protect Education petitions are circulating across Arizona. A Betsy DeVos-backed group has launched a copycat petition (I-10-2026) designed to confuse voters into thinking they've already signed the real one. The real Protect Education Initiative is I-09-2026 and includes the word "voucher" in the first sentence of the 200-word summary on the front. If it's not there, do not sign it. Find real signing locations here: https://bit.ly/4sR9miH

Sunburnt & Stubborn is produced by June at Arizona Advocacy Hub. All politics is local. So is the resistance.
